Produce

It is always best to eat foods local to your region.  “Local Harvest” is an excellent place to find organic foods closest to you.

If you are located in the South East, I highly recommend “Off The Vine Produce“.

“Off the Vine Produce is the Southeast’s certified organic produce & grocery home delivery service since 2002. Our produce is always USDA certified organic.  By eating fresh with us, you are supporting the fresh local harvest, the local farmers and some of the small businesses in your area -all in one stop!”

New for 2010  The Earth to Table “Farm Box” produce delivery service here in Savannah-affiliated with Executive Chef Matthew Roher [of Cha Bella, Earth to Table Catering, Avondale Farm, and Savannah Organics (a prepared retail food company)]  I haven’t used the service myself but many of my friends have and give it rave reviews.

The ChuckWagon Beef Company [highly recommended]
Chuckwagon Beef Company, the CW brand, has been in operation in the lowcountry of South Carolina for nearly 20 years now. We are Joan and Scott Justice, founders of the CW, and with our four daughters we operate our ranch using natural, humane and environmentally sustainable practices. Most importantly, we live on the ranch and the CW is our way of life, not just a business.

Slanker’s [friend recommended]

“Welcome one and all to our web site.  Slanker’s Grass-fed Meats is the marketing arm of Ted Slanker’s ranch where we raise grass-fed beef in the Red River Valley of northeast Texas.  We also raise grass-fed pigs, grass-fed goats, grass-fed poultry, and grass-fed rabbits.  We also have a bunch of grass-fed horses and a bigger bunch of “grass-fed” dogs and cats.  For years we’ve been raising beef the Natural Way, which is free-ranging on lush grasslands, without grain, foreign feeds, hormones or a steady diet of antibiotics.”

Good Earth Farms [highly recommended]
“We are Mike and Deb Hansen, and along with our three children, we own and operate an 80 acre farm named “Gifts From the Good Earth” near the central Wisconsin community of Milladore. We strongly believe in the benefits of organic production and raise our grass-fed Belted Galloway beef cattle Pasture-Raised Chickens and Turkeys, and Pastured Pork in methods that meet and exceed the National Organic Program standards. In 1998, we achieved organic certification and are currently certified by the Midwest Organic Services Association (MOSA).  In 2003, we added pasture-raised pork and pasture-raised turkey to our farm.  For 2005, we also added lamb as an offering.  The lamb will be raised by one of the six farms that work with us in our farming efforts.”

Grass Fed Traditions [full range of meats available here]
[My family found these chickens to be smaller in size and the cuts were a bit unusual and inconsistent...but the meat was quite tasty.]

“Our Pastured Poultry chickens raised on Cocofeed. When we began looking for a good source of chicken raised on pasture, we found that all the organic chickens available were fed a high concentration of soybeans, and this concerned us. So after two years of research, we finally came up with an organic feed that was soy-free and utilized the coconut pulp that was left over after the coconut oil was extracted from it. The trial batches raised in 2005 went very well, and laboratory tests showed lauric acid present in the chickens. In May 2006 we introduced these chickens to our customers. We know of no other chicken like this currently in the U.S.”
